Our Story: Where Convenience Meets Innovation
The idea behind Scan Mailboxes was born long before the technology caught up.
Back in 1997, our founder Ken Brown III was living in Oklahoma City and working for a state law enforcement agency. Security protocols required him to use a P.O. Box—meaning countless trips across town, only to find an empty box or a pile of junk mail. It wasted gas, time, and money, and the frustration added up quickly.
An inventor and entrepreneur at heart, Ken wondered: “Why can’t the post office just send a text via a one-way pager when I have mail waiting in my mailbox?”
It was a simple question with a forward-thinking implication. His early vision—receiving notifications and viewing mail digitally—was years ahead of the world’s readiness.
Fast forward to 2007. During his previous career at a large telecommunications corporation, Ken traveled frequently and used a private mailbox rental service in the Dallas area. With all the technology available, he was shocked that digital mail scanning still didn’t exist. Again, he saw the opportunity: Mail should meet people where they are—not the other way around.
Around the same time, Ken’s wife served on the boards of several local organizations. Each month she drove to an out-of-the-way mailbox, often retrieving outdated or irrelevant mail. The Browns kept asking themselves: Why waste gas, time, and money when you could simply check your mailbox from your computer or phone?
A Turning Point: 2013
In 2013, Ken learned of—and even tried—another mail-scanning service, Outbox Mail. But the experience revealed why the industry needed something better.
Outbox required customers to use their own home addresses. Mail was only retrieved from mailboxes a few times per week, then automatically opened and scanned without giving customers any privacy control. The model was slow, restrictive, and invasive.
Ken knew there had to be a smarter way.
He’d held onto his idea for 17 years: a service that scanned mail and posted it online for customers to view securely and instantly—without driving across town or waiting days for delivery.
As Jay Leno joked about Outbox Mail, “[Why not] just walk 20 feet to your mailbox?”
And as Jerry Seinfeld recently quipped on The Tonight Show, “If the Post Office really wants to be helpful, just open the letters, read ’em, and email us what it says!”
Ironically, that’s exactly the vision behind Scan Mailboxes—delivered with complete confidentiality, customer control, and modern convenience.
